By now most have heard of the massive destruction and devastation Hurricane Ike wreaked in the Caribbean. While we are unable to make an official assessment, a small team will soon travel to the Caribbean to assess the damage. We request your prayer for the victims.
Turk and Caicos
District Overseer of Grand Turk, Bishop Austraham Hamilton, saw extensive roof damage, with only a portion remaining. Many living in Grand Turk lost their homes entirely.
Bishop George Fulford, District Overseer of South Caicos, also found his roof damaged, and the Creole Church there was extensively damaged. The New Testament Church suffered flood damaged, with furniture and carpet lost both in Grand Turk and South Caicos. Almost half of the members’ homes were severely damaged.
Providenciales, also known as Provo, was spared the brunt of Ike and escaped severe destruction. The New Testament Church suffered roof damage, but was used as a hurricane shelter housing over 200 people during the storm.
Haiti
Dr. Fedlyn Beason, Field Director to the Caribbean, reports that Haiti has been severely damaged by the hurricane. Four members in one church were killed, ten church buildings have been completely destroyed, and several hundred church members have lost their homes and possessions. Many members were saved by waiting in trees until help came.
We are sending funds immediately to assist the victims.
