HAITI — By the grace of God, the reconstruction project begun a couple of years ago was doing well until the destructive earthquake led to the collapse of what had already been done.
The Church of God of Matthieu, located in the plain of Leogane and headed by pastor Harold Etienne, is one of the churches destroyed by the recent earthquake in Haiti. Leogane was at the epicenter of the earthquake and was the most damaged area. It is estimated that 90% of Leogane is gone.

Haitians at the COG compound
The Church of God of Matthieu has been growing steadily and needed structural expansion for a very long time. By the grace of God, the reconstruction project begun a couple years ago was doing well until the destructive earthquake led to the collapse of what had already been done. The new building was a two-story building with a sanctuary and an elementary school.
My parents grew up in this church; they met and married there. My sisters and I were all born and presented to the Lord in that church. I have great memories of the many conventions I participated in at Carrefour Vert when Leogane was one district. The current pastors of Petite Riviere (Rev Gerard Boutin), Bon-Repos (Rev. Yvon Phildord) and many others are all former pastors of the Church of God of Matthieu. Our youth association won the national Bible contest that was organized by the National office of Church of God in Haiti on several occasions.
I no longer live in Haiti but I stay a member of the Church of God because of the good work done by my hometown church in Leogane. I will continue to help the Church in any way I can by God’s Grace.
