Beginning a Work in Malta

Two missionaries seek to establish the first Church of God in Malta.

By Tom O’Dowd

We were recently appointed to serve as missionaries to the island of Malta, a country situated centrally in the Mediterranean Sea between Europe and North Africa. Malta is just below Italy, southeast of Sicily. It has a population of over 400,000 people; however, less than one percent is Evangelical Christian.

We have been here for over one month and already have a vision to plant the first Church of God work in the country. We also plan to get involved in evangelism efforts and to establish a discipleship training school. We both have a heart to use Malta as a base in reaching into North Africa, bringing the light of Jesus Christ into the darkness of Islamic lands.

Building Relationships

Before being called to Malta, we served five years in the South Pacific Islands of Fiji, as well as over 15 years in the Philippines, where we would fly into Malaysia to stay with a Muslim family as time permitted. Having begun our missionary career in 1989, we have had 20 years experience in evangelism, church planting, pastoring and doing humanitarian works. During that time we built relationships and ministered to Muslims whenever we could, but in our hearts it never seemed to be enough.

We will soon be networking with 400 pastors at a conference who share our burden for Muslims. Pray that these meetings will be safe, successful, and ultimately result in many souls being won to Christ.

Paul was shipwrecked here in Malta 2,000 years ago, and three miracles took place. Kuulei and I believe God will establish another miracle here. So please help us pray for the North African Muslims.
