A conservative grassroots organizer says with the Left making big gains in the November elections, things could get worse for conservative college students across the U.S.
The Leadership Institute, located in Washington, DC, helps train students who wish to start grassroots conservative groups on their college campuses. Spokesperson Ian Ivey says with the amount of leftist ideology already prevalent on colleges and universities, it is hard to imagine that things could get worse for conservative students. But he says it could happen once liberals take control in 2009.
“Especially in the degree to which their rights to free speech and self-expression are either protected or attacked and undermined,” says Ivey. “So right now what we see is student government groups, administrators, [and] faculty all feel relatively free to attack conservatives for simply expressing conservative ideas and philosophy on campus.
“I think that’s going to continue and become significantly worse over the next four years.”
Although Ivey says it probably will not translate into expulsion of all conservative students, he does warn that liberal educators and students could get an emboldened sense of entitlement to squash all opposing ideas.
Ivey also notes that conservative broadcasters could see the revival of the so-called “Fairness Doctrine,” a policy that could force conservative broadcasters to carry an alternate liberal view on their programs.
