Christian Attorneys Defend Public Prayer

An atheist organization is yet again opposing the practice of opening public meetings with prayer.

Public prayer is constitutional and customary within many governing agencies, according to Joel Oster, an attorney with the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF).

“The town of Chesapeake, Virginia, has allowed prayer before it begins its town council sessions — and that practice is now under attack by the Freedom From Religion Foundation,” he notes.

ADF has offered to defend the city free-of-charge if they adopt the ADF policy that allows for prayer at the beginning of a council session. Oster adds the Foundation is using familiar tactics.

“This is a threat. This is intimidation to scare people into stop doing what has been done constitutionally in America since its inception,” he adds. “Since the beginning of our country, legislatures have opened up sessions with prayer. It is a practice that the U.S. Supreme Court has approved of, and it is perfectly permissible.”

Because of the number of threats against governing bodies by atheist organizations, Oster is hopeful more of them will stand for their rights.
