Employees at California Prudential Realty were told to go to a seminar, but first they had to read a book and watch a video on Buddhism. Attorney Richard Ackerman, head of the Pro-Family Law Center, gives details about the book titled Buddha 9 To 5: The Eightfold Path to Enlightening Your Workplace and Improving Your Bottom Line.
“It’s Buddhist theology; that’s basically what it is,” he explains. “And actually, one of the sadder parts of it is that it’s even a perversion of [Buddhism] because it suggests that Buddhism is all about capitalism and increasing profits.”
Ackerman’s client then went to the seminar as instructed, but she was very uncomfortable sitting in the lotus position with her hands over her head and chanting “om” — a practice usually associated with Hinduism. The book, according to WorldNetDaily, claims to provide tools to “reawaken yourself, your employees, and your organization.”
The attorney explains what happened to his client. “She was required to engage in Buddhist chants, to sit in a darkened room for about 15 minutes and, after they had got done with their prayer and meditation session, they turned on the lights and asked if anybody felt uncomfortable,” Ackerman contends.
As a pastor’s wife, she spoke up and explained her discomfort. According to Ackerman, she was harassed for months before she was fired. The harassment included moving her into an office without air conditioning.
Ackerman wrote a letter to Prudential explaining that he will investigate his client’s claims of harassment, religious discrimination, and hostility that led to her termination. He has also filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and is asking for compensation for his client.
