Lee University Offers Class on Dead Sea Scrolls

Cleveland, Tenn.–Lee University will offer “Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible,” a special course taught by visiting professor Dr. Hannah Harrington this coming July.

“Dr. Harrington is a well-known lecturer on the purity rites of the scrolls and how these relate to the Bible,” says Dr. Terry Cross, dean of the College of Religion at Lee. “Rarely does one get an opportunity to hear such experts as Dr. Harrington in a single lecture, but Lee has provided for her to teach an entire summer session. It is a course that will stimulate your interest and engage your mind and spirit for years to come.”

The course will offer an exploration of the Dead Sea Scrolls in their ancient context and their current relevance for biblical studies. Both college and graduate-level course credit can be earned.

The Dead Sea Scrolls are considered to be the most important discovery of biblical archaeology in modern times. The Scrolls, composed of about 900 documents, contain some of the only surviving Biblical documents created before 100 A.D. Discovered in caves along the shore of the Dead Sea, the Scrolls also provide insight to Judaic practices during the Second Temple period.

“The Dead Sea Scrolls have remarkable light to cast on the world of the Bible, and Dr. Hannah Harrington is a dynamic teacher who will serve as an expert guide through this exciting study,” says Department of Theology Chair Dr. Rickie Moore. “I’m delighted that Lee can feature such a wonderful guest teacher and course in our summer schedule.”

Harrington holds the Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley and is Professor of Old Testament at Patten University in Oakland, California, another university affiliated with the Church of God. A specialist in Old Testament studies and the Intertestamental period, she is especially known for her extensive scholarship on the Dead Sea Scrolls, having published three books and numerous articles on the subject.

The class will meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:15a.m. to 12:30p.m. from July 6-30. However, students should preregister for the class no later than May 5.
