Faith Leaders Gather to ‘Pray and Work to End Political Violence’
Washington, DC–Faith leaders gathered on the steps of the United States Capitol to hold a public witness to “Pray and Work to End Political Violence.”
The vigil was held on Sunday, September 14, at 3:00 PM on the southeastern steps of the US Capitol. (The House of Representatives side.)
The group displayed a large banner with the message: “Pray And Work To End Political Violence.”
In the wake of the tragic murders of Charlie Kirk, and Minnesota State Representative Hortman and her husband, it is critical our nation and leaders seek God for healing and an end to the violence and hateful rhetoric.
Alexei Laushkin, Founder of Kingdom Mission Society, comments:
“From the assassinations of Rep. Melissa Hortman to Charlie Kirk we are facing a time of horrific political violence. In our past, Presidents from Lincoln to Madison called for specific days of prayer and fasting at various times and lengths. We think another such time has arrived. So we, a coalition of diverse pastors and lay leaders, are calling for 40 Days of Prayer and Fasting starting Sunday. As Christians, we know that the healing of our nation will not come from politics alone. It will not be forged in the halls of Congress or won in the battles on social media. It will begin on our knees in prayer and fasting.”
“We ask our fellow Christians to join us in organizing set aside times of prayer during Sunday worship and small group gatherings throughout the week, as well as times of public prayer at State Capitals and City Halls throughout the nation.”
Rev. Patrick Mahoney, Director of the Washington, DC based Christian Defense Coalition, stated, “In the wake of the tragic murders of Charlie Kirk, Minnesota State Representative Hortman and her husband, it is critical for our nation and leaders to seek God for healing and an end to the violence and hateful rhetoric. We will especially be praying for members of Congress.”
“As Christians, we must stand against and condemn all acts of political violence and pray for God to unite a divided America. Violence and hatred are becoming too commonplace in the public square and God is the only one who can bring hope and healing to our nation.”
“As Dr. Martin Luther King, who was himself a victim of political violence, said, ‘Hate begets hate; violence begets violence…We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.’”
