Building Bridges Through Music

Jewish Composer, Dr. Samuel Adler’s story is a “DRAMA IN REAL LIFE” full of remarkable stories, rescues, journeys, and bridge-building through the international language of music. On Saturday, April 27th he presented: Part III of the Four-Part Series — Building Bridges through Music — 95 Years to Speak to Our Time. The expanded series, encapsulates his incredible life of music and vision.

Dr. Samuel Adler escaped Nazi Germany at age 10 with his father during “Kristallnacht” (the night of broken glass). A pipe organ fell and distracted soldiers below and he and his father escaped with their arms full of sheet music and they ran through an underground tunnel to safety. They took the last train out of Germany and moved to the USA where Samuel Adler became a well-known composer, conductor, and professor sharing his prolific musical gifts.

Incredibly, Samuel Adler returned to his hometown of Mannheim, Germany with the US Army and it was here that he used music to bring the town together sparking the beginning of the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra, which then travelled throughout Europe uniting people from diverse backgrounds through music after World War II.
Part III highlights the remarkable sixty-three years at Juilliard, and Eastman, which included masterclasses and workshops at over 300 universities world-wide.

Dr. Samuel Adler is one of the greatest living composers and conductors of our time. He is a legendary risk-taker with over 400 published works to his name.

His recent album, sung by world-renowned Gloriae Dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God) just won The American Prize featuring “To Speak to Our Time” (written to commemorate Kristallnacht), and he has received numerous awards including ASCAP’s “Aaron Copland Lifetime Achievement Award.” At age ninety-five, he continues to compose and speak, sharing his prolific musical gifts.
