Fourth Edition of ‘Ancient Israel’ Book Available This Month

The Biblical Archaeology Society (BAS) has a fully revised and updated edition of “Ancient Israel: From Abraham to the Roman Destruction of the Temple” coming soon in early June. A seminal title first introduced in 1988 by BAS founding editor Hershel Shanks, it has sold more than 30,000 copies.

This fourth edition, edited by John Merrill and Hershel Shanks, has been completely updated to survey more than a millennium of Israel’s history from the ancestral narratives through the cataclysmic Roman destruction of the Jerusalem Temple – in 456 pages of authoritative, accessible text, and accompanied by pictures, charts, and other images.

Leading international scholars including Manfred Bietak, Melody Knowles, Andre Lemaire, Eric Meyers, and Gary Rendsburg, contributed individual chapters. Renowned scholars Andrea Berlin and Jennie Ebeling also provided fresh new material on the roles of women in ancient Israel, offering valuable additional perspective.

“Ancient Israel” has been used extensively as a college textbook, as well as an introductory course and reference resource for readers seeking a solid, reliable history of ancient Israel. The new edition has both print and digital versions. Order from the BAS online store at www.biblicalarchaeology.org/ai or call 1-800-221-4644, ext. 2. Quantity discounts are available.

The Biblical Archaeology Society and its flagship magazine “Biblical Archaeology Review” offer both scholars and general readers relevant, current and historical information on developments in Israel and its environs. Visit the BAS website at www.biblicalarchaeology.org.
