World Missions Remembers Joel Hobbs

Church of God World Missions Director Dr. David M. Griffis and Assistant Director, Dr. M. Thomas Propes extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of former World Missions representative, Joel Hobbs, who passed away at age 88 in Charleston, South Carolina, on February 13, 2020.

Hobbs was ordained in the Church of God in 1958 and served his Maker and the church in many capacities. He organized a church in Augusta, South Carolina in 1952 and pastored several other churches in South Carolina before pastoring the Westmore Church of God in Cleveland, Tennessee. Prior to a long-term pastorate at West Ashley Church of God in Charleston, he served as overseer of the state of Oregon. Hobbs also received many acknowledgements of honor and of his service on various boards.

Hobbs served as a missions representative for World Missions from 1978 until 1984. Due to his community involvement and extensive time as a pastor, he was able to relate the purpose and story of Church of God World Missions to countless congregations.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Margaret, and three children: Joel David, Byron Stanley, and Dee Renee; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Dr. Griffis and Dr. Propes want to express their appreciation on behalf of the entire World Missions family for the time Brother Hobbs tirelessly worked as a missions representative, helping to keep missionaries on the field, train indigenous pastors, and bring hope to those who had never heard the gospel of Christ.
