Men and Women of Action to the Rescue

Sevierville, TN—Church of God Smoky Mountain Children’s Home (SMCH) Executive Director Dr. Walt Mauldin recently announced that supporters Ron and Betty Ogle of Sevierville have donated a 5,000 square foot house, as well as two empty lots to the SMCH. The property’s worth exceeds $500,000. Since SMCH provides housing benefits for all full-time caregivers, the need for staff housing is a continual need.

Immediate conversations were initiated with Director of Men and Women of Action Phil Thompson about assisting in the total renovation of the structure. Jerry Pierce served as coordinator of two teams of volunteers from Park West Church of God in Knoxville and North Cleveland Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn. Jon Franklin led the North Cleveland group. A total of 20 accomplished the demolition on September 6-7.

Combined teams worked hard to complete the interior project. Drywall and paneling had to be removed from the upstairs and downstairs. Two kitchens and several bathrooms had to be eliminated.

The two-day event reminded everyone of an HGTV project. It was incredible to watch the fast pace. It seemed like as soon as it started, within a fifteen-hour timeframe, it was over. Mauldin shared, “SMCH is indebted to Phil Thompson and the Men and Women of Action for their acts of kindness and coming to our rescue! We pray God will bless each of them as they have blessed us.”
