Hill Issues Statement On Political Civility

Cleveland, TN–In response to the political discussion going on in the United States, Dr. Timothy M. Hill, General Overseer of the Church of God, issued the following statement:

“Although we are still over a year from the 2020 elections, the political discourse in the United States has taken a decidedly negative turn. Every issue seems to raise strong emotions on both sides. Courtesy and considerate behavior towards the opposing side no longer seems to be an option, making reaching agreement and compromise almost impossible. Many would say that we are more divided as a nation than ever before. Race, ethnicity, and even religion have become political dividing lines.

Let me just simply say that I believe that as children of a living God we are all created equal in His sight. Our words and deeds as Christians should be rooted in love and respect for our fellow man. However, we do have laws of our land and they must be followed. While we may disagree with the application of certain laws, our responsibility is to follow the law and work to change it if changes are needed.

Most importantly, we must never allow our pulpits to become political podiums. Our goal is to reach the lost for Jesus Christ and FINISH the Great Commission. Anything that takes us away from that core mission is nothing more than a distraction.

I call on you to pray for our nation and our leaders. If we as the people of God humble ourselves and pray, I truly believe that we can have a healing in our nation, brought about not by our actions, but by the actions of a just and righteous God. Lord heal our nation today.”

Señor, sana a nuestra nación hoy.
