Rick Larson, an attorney and professor, wanted to produce an accurate portrayal of the biblical star of Bethlehem for a decorative set in his front yard one Christmas. That led him on a quest that spanned years and has resulted in the DVD titled, The Star of Bethlehem. The 63-minute documentary explores historical documents, scientific findings, and data that explain and confirm the account from the Book of Matthew.
Larson says the ancient skies can be recreated. “It turns out the solar system and the universe are like a great clock,” he explains. “They’re extremely regular in their actions and governed by mathematical laws and they’re predictable. And that was basically puzzled through in the early 1600s by Johannes Kepler,” says Larson.
“So we’ve known the three laws of planetary motion since then,” he continues. “And since then it’s been possible to calculate the appearance of the night sky in ancient times, viewing from anyplace on earth. And we have a very accurate picture — not really an approximation, [but] an accurate picture of what the skies looked like [at that time].”
Larson concludes that the star was a unique, verifiable occurrence — a convergence of “wandering stars,” or planets — that announced the birth of Christ, resulting in the brightest star anyone had seen at that time.
