Cleveland, TN–Lee University’s Cultural Diversity Committee hosted a series of events this week to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD). Activities included lectures, a panel discussion, chapel services, and a poster competition.
Lee began honoring International Women’s Day in 2008, recognizing this day as an opportunity to mark the economic, political, and social achievements of women.
“I love the fact that Lee University takes a whole week to celebrate International Women’s Day with a series of events designed to remember, affirm, and honor what God Himself says about women,” said Dr. Ana Alves Shippey, assistant professor of political science at Lee. “Women, along with men, are created in God’s own image, and together and simultaneously both man and woman are blessed (Genesis 1: 27-28).”
Activities began Tuesday morning with a special liturgical service held in Lee’s Chapel. Catherine Mantooth, senior lecturer in theatre and theatre technical director, spoke about the way she experienced God’s provision after going through a series of difficult years. The service was officiated by Associate Professor of Christian Formation Dr. Lisa Long, and music was provided by Dr. Lenena Brezna, assistant professor of voice, and Ladies of Lee.
Events continued Wednesday with the fifth annual student poster session. This event included poster presentations from students of any major who presented on various topics pertaining to women’s issues. Cash prizes were awarded to the top three student presenters.
Katelyn Beaty spoke on Thursday, March 14 in Conn Center. She is the author of “A Woman’s Place” and contributor to Christianity Today, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and The New York Times. Beaty addressed questions on women in church leadership.
IWD concluded on Thursday night with a School of Religion panel titled, “Women and Social Change.” The roundtable featured panelists Dr. Lisa Stephenson, Dr. Mary McCampbell, and Sara Keel.
Other events of the week included “Latte in the Library,” with Dr. Suzanne Holt, where she told her story, and meeting with faculty members for advice on navigating college, life experiences, or life’s plans. A faculty and staff reception was also held to honor women on staff.
All events were free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
