Operation Compassion Begins Disaster Response to Tortola

Since Hurricane Irma struck the island nation in the British Virgin Islands, Tortola has been trying to piece together enough infrastructure to begin receiving shipments in port.
After receiving clearance this week, Operation Compassion began sending 40-foot containers to Tortola.

According to Ismael Charles, field director of the Caribbean for the Church of God, “Tortola experienced sustained winds at 185 mph and gusts at 220 mph that decimated the island. Eighty-five percent of the island’s infrastructure was destroyed and people are in need of everything in every category. Tortola has never experienced anything like it!”

In response to the need in Tortola, Operation Compassion has sent fortified, healthy dinners, disaster food buckets, cereal, battled water, baby and adult diapers, flashlights, batteries, clothing, bedding and assorted other products. After a month of barely surviving, Tortola will be receiving much needed relief. In addition, Dominica, another island nation hit hard by recent category 5 hurricanes, will also be receiving assistance from Operation Compassion.

As Operation Compassion continues disaster relief operations from Houston, Texas to multiple locations in Florida to Puerto Rico to Tortola and wherever disaster strikes, they need partners that will continue to participate financially to help move product to survivors. The most effective way to offer assistance is through giving by one of the following methods: www.operationcompassion.org (givedirect button); call in donations to 423.728.3932; or mail donations to: Operation Compassion, 114 Stuart Road, NE, PMB 370, Cleveland, TN 37312.
