Operation Compassion Prepares for Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey is forecast to become a category 3 hurricane before its landfall later tonight or into early Saturday somewhere between Port O’Conner and Matagorda Bay, Texas. Weather forecasters are predicting a catastrophic and life-threatening landfall with 6 to 12 feet of flooding as more than 3 feet of rain is expected. As winds climb to 125 mile per hour or more devastating damage to homes, businesses and other structures are likely.

Throughout the region mandatory and volunteer evacuations are taking place as people are leaving to escape. While many are making necessary preparations to leave, Operation Compassion and many of its disaster relief partners are making preparations to respond to the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

Operation Compassion has contacted our disaster relief partners and product was brought in well ahead of Hurricane Harvey. World Emergency Relief (WER) has sent cleaning supplies which are staged and ready to ship. God’s Pit Crew (GPC) has provided disaster relief buckets filled with items necessary to survive following the storm. Operation Outreach has provided bottled water for Harvey’s survivors. Mercy Chefs (MC) will set-up one of its portable kitchens in the storm area and another one in the Houston area. Each kitchen is capable of serving more than 5,000 meals a day. Feed the Children (FTC) has also responded with a semi-trailer of disaster relief supplies.

With the unpredictability of just where Hurricane Harvey will make landfall, Operation Compassion and its partners are staging their products waiting to find the best and most suitable place to establish a relief center.
