Winterfest Becomes GodTube, YouTube Phenomenon

In our brokenness and desperation we have all run to the Lord. A human video posted by a student on the widely-popular YouTube and GodTube, performed at the 2006 Smoky Mountain Winterfest, depicts this very thing: a soul straying and desperately returning to Christ, the God who saves. And many individuals who view it on the Internet are doing the very same.

The piece, written by Mission Director Tim Houston from Baltimore, Md., depicts a young woman experiencing the purity of a first discovery and love of Christ. Then sin, coming in as a mere “distraction”, finally overwhelms the young woman in traps of sexual impurity, the party lifestyle, bulimia, cutting, and, finally, deception that leads toward suicide. Christ, with loving power, fights the darkness and rescues the young woman out of her bondage.

The video communicates a great message: We don’t have to be lost without hope in our sins, separated from Christ. The Christ of the cross – and the victory He accomplished there – is evident in this piece and made available to those who watch it.

The authenticity of that hope has drawn more than three million views of the video on GodTube, and more than one million on YouTube. Winterfest staff has received emails reporting people receiving Christ and healing as a result of watching the video. Youth leaders from all parts of the country have requested copies of the DVD in order to teach the skit to their drama teams to use in other ministry venues. Many after reviewing the entire Winterfest service have called in to receive more information about this “Winterfest event.”

In a time when youth are plunged daily into a world of conflicting messages and deception, the authenticity of the Gospel portrayed in this video is powerful and real: “For God so loved ….”
