By Dr. Coleman Peacock, Director of Development, Church of God Smoky Mountain Children’s Home
On Sunday September 2, 2007, my wife and I spent an enjoyable day at Riveroak Church of God in Danville, Virginia as we honored a couple we have come to call, Guardian Angels.

They were Doug and Sallie Coone. For eleven years the Coones have been leading the Riveroak congregation in its benevolent ministry to the Church of God Home for Children. They have raised thousands of dollars and made countless trips to the Home taking supplies, clothing and food. They have taken cottages on shopping sprees for school clothing and school supplies. Their love for the children and the staff has never been surpassed. That is why we refer to them as our Guardian Angels.
This special service is to honor them for their dedication and faithfulness. Poor health is now preventing them from their active service, but not from their active fervor. As Pastor Tim Nuckles, the congregation and I honored them, they already had their replacements standing by. As we presented beautiful plaques and accolades to them, they were already telling Pastor Nuckles and their replacements (Roger and JoAnn Nester) what needs to be done.
As a result of their many years of service Pastor Nuckles and the Riveroak Church of God congregation are planning a visit to the Home for Children where they will completely refurbish the Old Dominion Cottage. This will be a testament to two faithful warriors whom we refer to as our Guardian Angels. The mantle is being passed on to Roger and JoAnn Nester to lead the congregation in their benevolent ministry to the Home for children. And I am sure that one day, they will earn the title of Guardian Angels.
