Deaf Ministry Founder Leaves Legacy

Curtis Runny Humphries, 58, a former resident of Michigan, passed away Saturday, Feb. 23 at his home. He had been involved in deaf ministry for more than 30 years ministering to deaf children, youth and adults through camps, Runny’s Recreation, Bible studies, and various other mentoring opportunities. He also taught sign language at Lee University and was one of the founders of Lee’s Deaf Ministry Association.

Humphries was most recently involved in establishing a deaf community center, Bible school, and education program in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Below is a recent testimony from Curt Humphries submitted to Church of God World Missions:

I (Curt) recently had to spend some time in the hospital. But, because of modern technology, I am able to teach the deaf Sunday afternoon Bible class, Tuesday night discipleship class and be with the deaf during fellowship on Friday nights. We have a video conferencing phone in our home here in the States and one in the Deaf Ministry Center in Honduras. Praise God we can still work with the deaf in Honduras and be here at the same time.

Some of you may not know I have been battling a form or Leukemia for over a year. The doctors said there is no hope, but God is in complete control. I get my blood checked weekly and if I need blood or platelets they give them to me. So I fall down, but I also get right back up.

Rev. Paul and Kim Dyar recently arrived in Honduras and have been a tremendous help. They have moved to San Pedro Sula and serve as teacher and administrator. Paul will also be starting the deaf church.

Cheryl is actively training new teachers because the deaf adults and parents of deaf children have been spreading the word and dozens of parents have come to register their children for training. We have been conducting discipleship classes, and now Paul and Cheryl are conducting leadership training and identifying deaf leaders to help with some of the responsibilities.

A team from North Carolina will be arriving to build some shelving, tables and work areas so the vocation training can expand. God is truly blessing us.

Thank you to all who pray for us. Also, we appreciate those of you who have supported us financially. Again, I can not say it strongly enough, we could not do what we are doing without you.
