For the past 10 years, Operation Compassion, an independent benevolent organization with ties to the Church of God, has been working on a plan to help feed hungry families and help provide them an income at the same time. This plan has taken on new growth as 6.6 million seed packets of vegetables and flowers have been set to Africa and Latin America.
“The families in each area that have been selected make an average of less than $1 each day,” stated Dave Lorency, director of Operation Compassion. “As the vegetable seeds grow and are harvested, families can feed themselves as well as use the remaining vegetables to trade for meat, milk and other products. The flowers that are grown are used to sell for needed family income that will help sustain each participating family.”
“In Ghana, Africa the idea of developing a micro-enterprise was so appealing the President got involved clearing containers and providing land for families that were not land owners. Even the Agricultural Institute were using the seeds to help as well,” Lorency said.
When the program is in full swing, approximately 660,000 people will have received help from the growing crops and many micro-enterprise farms will have been established.
