A Church of God pastor from Florida is making a 540-mile bike ride across three southeast Asian countries to raise money and awareness for poverty in the region.
Travis Johnson, pastor of Life Pointe Church, is in the midst of the ride with an expected finish of this Thursday, February 2. The journey, called “Will Ride for Hope,” began in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, through Cambodia, with stops in the capital city of Pnomh Penh and Siem Reap, then on to Bangkok, Thailand.
“I’m riding 540 miles in order to bring hope to Cambodia through People for Care and Learning (www.peopleforcare.org),” Johnson stated. “This ride will be the first of many rides, runs, walks, and swims around the world by many people who want to raise awareness and money concerning extreme poverty. PCL will build homes, drill water wells, provide education, medical care, vocational training, and humanitarian work.” Johnson’s efforts have raised over $20,000 so far toward the “Build A City” project (www.buildacity.org) announced last week by PCL. The aim is to build an entire city in Cambodia, complete with homes, recreational space, schools and infrastructure. People for Care and Learning is a group with roots in the Church of God and directed by Dr. Fred Garmon.
Johnson is the lead pastor of Life Pointe Church with two campuses in the south Florida communities of Homestead (Greater Miami) and Plantation Key (Upper Keys). He is also founder of www.willrideforhope.com and www.willrunforhope.com, which brings hope to Southeast Asia through local runs, walks, and cycling events. He studied at Miami-Dade College, Lee University, and Church of God Theological Seminary. While church planting, he was a marketing director for a Carlyle Group company. He resides in South Florida with his wife, Kelly and three children, Kourtney, McKenna, and Blake.
You can follow Johnson’s journey via his blog at willrideforhope.wordpress.com where he and his wife, Kelly have posted videos and photos from the first four days through Viet Nam and Cambodia.
