Church of God publications began over a century ago when what is today the Church of God Evangel was launched under the title Evening Light. Over the last hundred years denominational publications around the globe have come and gone and changed with the times. In a day when many print magazines are disappearing altogether or scaling back in favor electronic versions, long-standing Church of God publications are being offered in traditional and electronic formats.
The Evangel was launched in 1910 and publishes inspirational and informative articles highlighting the mission, doctrine, and ministry of the Church of God and helping readers to live as Pentecostal Christians. It launched an electronic version several years ago, but continues to offer the printed version of the monthly denominational publication. The magazine is available by subscription for both the printed and electronic versions by visiting www.pathwaypress.org.
Leadership is a quarterly publication targeted toward Christian education and youth leaders. This includes Sunday school teachers and leaders, youth pastors, children’s church leaders, music personnel, Christian education directors, pastors and outreach workers. Like Evangel, Leadership is also available by subscription through Pathway Press.
A third denomination-wide publication produced by the Church of God is Engage, a journal for Church of God leaders. It is produced and mailed to all active pastors, church ministry staff personnel, and denominational leaders. Contents of the quarterly publication include informative articles about current trends, book reviews and self-help stories around a quarterly thematic emphasis.
Several departments and ministries of the Church of God also offer regular publications, such as SOW magazine, produced by Church of God World Missions. Lee University produces the quarterly magazine Torch, mailed to all alumni of the school. There are others that are printed on an annual or bi-ennial basis or for special events.
“It goes without saying that the internet has affected print publications,” stated Cameron Fisher, communications and internet ministry coordinator for the Church of God and editor of the Church of God journal, Engage. “It has changed the way readers get their publications. While many prefer to receive their subscriptions through electronic means, such as by download to electronic readers, there is still a demand for the printed publication. Pathway Press has recognized the growing trend toward mobile phone apps and now offers an app for their resources. As publication trends change, the Church of God stands ready to adapt to these changes.”
