Yesterday, Faith News reported that Lee University was in the midst of their annual Missions Week. This year, Lee University chose the rebuilding of the La Saline Church of God in Port Au Prince, Haiti, for the 2011-2012 Missions Week Project. Not only are Lee students, faculty, and staff already at work, but an invitation was extended to local churches to join with them.
Lee Missions Week is named the “Dee Lavender Missions Week” in honor of Dee, a 22-year-old Lee student who, while spending her summer on a missions internship in Panama, Central America, became sick and died. Her words to her parents, “I know I’m where God wants me to be,” still motivate us to fulfill the Great Commission calling on our own lives.
The La Saline Church is in a strategic location in Port-au-Prince. Located on a highly traveled road, it sits across where big-rig trucks load shipping containers to distribute goods throughout Haiti. La Saline is also close to the gigantic City Market. In addition, this church was the first project for Church of God World Missions. In 1951, the 6th Ave. Church of God in Lenoir City, Tennessee, donated the monies to build the first building for this key church.
“Lee for Haiti” means rebuilding the vital educational facilities of the church, as well. La Saline provides a quality education for necessary academic and spiritual equipping, and also for job training. This qualifies Haitian youth to be able to find work that will sustain them and their families. In a country with 90 percent unemployment, trained and willing workers who love Christ will have an impact on the country.
Perhaps your heart still contains a vision to help change Haiti. Much work is underway and Church of God congregations are working hard to aid the rebuilding and to restore to the Haitians the ability to influence their communities. Please donate to Lee for Haiti through secure online giving, or call 800-345-7492. Your gift, given by March 2012, will be matched by the Lazarus Foundation, a partner with Lee University in changing the lives of children and youth.
You, too, can join with Lee University to change Haiti. Now, it’s up to you.
