Petersen Elected Moderator of Full Gospel Church of God in Southern Africa

Dr. Stafford Petersen was recently elected moderator of the Full Gospel Church of God of Southern Africa. Formerly secretary general of the Full Gospel Church, Petersen replaces Anton van Deventer whose time in the moderator role was completed due to tenure limitations.

Dr. van Deventer was elected as moderator of the Full Gospel Church in 2001, and was re-elected three times. He leaves the office as the longest-serving moderator in the history of the Full Gospel Church.

Since 2016, Petersen has been serving as the Full Gospel Church representative on the International Executive Council of the Church of God. He most recently attended the gatherings of the International Council and International Executive Council in September in Cleveland, Tennessee.

Petersen was elected during the national convention of the Full Gospel Church held earlier this month. Church of God General Overseer Tim Hill was present when Petersen was elected.

“Stafford Petersen will be a tremendous leader of the Full Gospel Church of God in South Africa,” Hill stated. “In sitting with him on the International Executive Council, I have found him to be a leader of influence, integrity, and spiritual depth. I look forward to his continued representation on the Council and now in his new role with the Full Gospel Church.”

The national convention this year coincided with the 20 year celebration of the Structural Unification of the Church, which took place on October 9, 1997. The event made the Full Gospel Church of God a nonracial and structurally integrated Church based upon on the basis of the agreed “20 Principles.”

Petersen, 49, attended Cape Evangelical Institute in Cape Town, now known as Corner Stone Christian College. He completed his B.A Honours in Theology at the University of Western Cape and in October 2010 he was awarded the Doctor of Divinity degree by Team Impact University. Pastor Petersen was accepted into the ministry in 1992. In 1993 he was called to Tabernacle of Life Full Gospel Church in Rocklands and served there until 2004 when he was called to Shekinah Full Gospel Church in Beacon Valley Mitchells Plain. In 1999 he was elected as the youngest Regional Overseer of the Cape Peninsula Region where he served until 2006 and again from 2010 until August 2015 when he was elected as Secretary General of the Full Gospel Church of God in Southern Africa. At the time he left the Shekinah Full Gospel Church, it had a membership of over 1,600.
