Cry Out America and National Day of Prayer Unite in Shared Vision

Cleveland, TN – The Cry Out America organizers of the annual, 9/11 prayer gatherings throughout the nation are uniting efforts with the National Day of Prayer Task Force. The National Day of Prayer (NDP) annual observance on the first Thursday in May became law under President Ronald Reagan in 1988. Their mission is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in every sphere of culture.

A joint resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives, declaring September 11 as Patriot Day, was signed into law by President George Bush on December 18, 2001. State and local governments along with the people of the United States are to observe Patriot Day with appropriate programs and activities. It has officially been proclaimed by President Barack Obama as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance,” following the 9/11 terrorist attacks on our nation.

Recognizing this as an important “wake-up call” to the nation, Cry Out America (COA) was established as a day of remembrance and prayer to “cry out to God” for a Christ awakening. Since 2008, COA has mobilized hundreds of thousands at 9/11 prayer gatherings in all 50 states, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. They continue to pursue their mission of inspiring the hearts of people in every state, every county, and every church to earnestly pray for America.

In light of their shared vision and this Christ awakening imperative, National Day of Prayer and Cry Out America have agreed to unite forces for greater, kingdom impact. According to Kay Horner, National Coordinator for COA, “United prayer has been foundational for true revivals and great awakenings of the past. The passion and purpose we share with NDP will have an even great impact as we unite resources, strategies, and dedicated volunteers in a powerful grassroots prayer movement.”

NDP Operations Officer Lisa Crump shared, “The risks of terrorism that we faced on September 11, 2001 are even greater now. Our combined COA and NDP efforts can and will make a difference with focused prayer points throughout the nation on the first Thursday of May, uniting again on 9/11, and in a consistent rhythm of prayer throughout the year.”

“We are excited to see what the Lord does as we unite our hearts and our resources for an exponential impact through this strategic alliance,” stated National Prayer Committee President Dave Butts, who also serves as chairman of the National Day of Prayer Task Force Board of Directors. The NDP board was unanimous in its decision to assume leadership of the Cry Out America 9/11 prayer initiative.

With this historic alliance becoming effective immediately, NDP and COA leaders will host their first joint retreat for state and regional coordinators this month. Many state and local coordinators already facilitate prayer gatherings on both days. “Ultimately, we want to see people praying in their homes, churches, and communities like never before,” continued Horner. “We also encourage your support of National Day of Prayer through financial and volunteer resources as we transition the oversight of Cry Out America to this long-standing ministry.”
