Do Signs and Wonders Still Build the Church?

Do signs and wonders still build the church? At least one young Christian woman in the country of Myanmar (Burma) will give an enthusiastic “yes” to the question.

By Dr. Bill George

Her name is Let Let Win (yes, that’s really her name), and she was the first person in her village to become a Christian. Her decision to follow Christ was not warmly received by those who knew her. At first, the whole village of Pae Kyaa was against her, including her own family. They accused her of immorality, calling her a prostitute, trying to shame her. She remained steadfast in her commitment to the Lord.

Over a period of months, two things happened that changed her Buddhist neighbors’ opinions of her and her God.

First, she had raised two cows for sale. The highest price anyone had ever paid for a cow in the economy of her community was $800. She prayed before taking the cows to the market, asking God for an unusual income from the sale. She had two animals, and if she received the highest price anyone had paid, she would have gotten $1,600. When the sale was concluded, however, she received $2,200. It was an unthinkable price, and the whole village was amazed. To them, it was a sign that her God was blessing her.

In her area, rice is harvested once a year, and the grain is stored in the house to be used throughout the year. The past harvest brought in less rice than usual because of a scarcity of rain. She—like other villagers—was unable to store enough rice, and they anticipated that before the year was finished they would have to begin buying rice from outside sources.

Let Let experienced something quite different, however, and it attracted the attention of her family and all the neighbors. Each time she prepared to cook rice [it is eaten at practically every meal], she would take out a handful, save and gather it, and take it to the church where she would share it with the pastor and widows. When she realized what was happening, she was amazed.

Her store of rice was not depleted! It was as if God was multiplying it before her eyes. Once again the attention of the neighbors was attracted, and they recognized it as an act of God.

The best news of all? Fifteen people in Pae Kyaa have become Christians, including Let Let’s own family. God still produces signs and wonders, and people see and believe. A young woman in a distant Burmese village testifies that God is real, He cares for His people, and His acts draw men and women to Him.
