Church of God to Observe National Senior Adult Sunday

Church of God USA Missions is offering resources to help the local church observe National Senior Adult Sunday on September 28, 2014.

Statistics about America’s aging population have been changing, including the sheer number of seniors coming of age in the last 15 years and beyond. They include:

• The older population (65+) numbered 41.4 million in 2011, an increase of 6.3 million or 18 percent since 2000;
• The number of Americans aged 45-64 who will reach 65 over the next two decades increased by 33 percent during this period.
• Over one in eight or 13 percent of the population is an older American.
• Persons reaching age 65 have an average life expectancy of an additional 19.2 years (20.4 years for females and 17.8 years for males).
• Older women outnumber older men at 23.4 million older women to 17.9 older men.

Within the church, the following statistics are found about senior adults:

• The Gallup poll indicates that nearly one-fifth of Protestants are at least 65 and two-fifths are at least 50 years old.
• As America ages, the number of senior adults in local churches increases as well.
• Aging and the needs of seniors in the congregation should be one of the primary concerns of every local church.
• A tremendous wealth of experience, talent, giftedness, information, and inspiration resides in these men and women.

We hope every congregation will make plans to honor this special group on Church of God Senior Adult Sunday, September 28, 2014,” said Dr. James Cossey, administrative coordinator for Church of God USA Missions. “This is a great opportunity to reach out to unchurched or displaced seniors in your community.”

Cossey said over three dozen ideas for an effective Senior Adult Day can be found in the Church of God Senior Adult Manual, downloadable for free on the website www.usamissions.com.
